1
Mental Health First Aid
The Mental Health First Aid course offered by MHFA England is an evidence-based, internationally recognised training programme designed to equip individuals with the knowledge, skills and confidence to support someone experiencing mental ill health or a mental health crisis. Unlike general awareness training, this extended course teaches practical first-aid-style support, similar in concept to physical first aid, but focused on mental health.
Delivered online, the course typically runs over two sessions totalling around 14 hours (often spread across two days), combining instructor-led live sessions with interactive activities. Participants learn through a mix of presentations, group discussions and real-world scenarios that build confidence and competence in recognising and responding to mental health challenges. Classes are kept small (usually up to 16 people) to ensure a supportive learning environment.
The training is ideal for anyone aged 16+ who wants to go beyond basic awareness and acquire practical skills to help others, whether in the workplace, at home, or in the community. No prior knowledge of mental health is required.
Throughout the course, participants begin by exploring what mental health is, why it matters, and how stigma and language influence people’s experiences. They learn to recognise early signs and symptoms of common mental health conditions and to understand how these can affect behaviour and wellbeing.

A core component of the course is learning to apply a Mental Health First Aid action plan, which guides learners in how to approach someone who may be struggling, listen without judgement, offer support and encouragement, and help them access appropriate professional or community help. The course covers both early intervention for emerging difficulties and responding in crisis situations, including elements such as active listening, empathy, and appropriate boundaries.

By the end of training, participants will be able to:
-
Recognise signs that someone may be experiencing poor mental health
-
Start sensitive, supportive conversations
-
Use active listening and empathy effectively
-
Guide individuals to appropriate support services
-
Understand how to respond in crisis and non-crisis situations
-
Reflect on self-care and boundaries in the supporting role
Upon successful completion, learners receive a Mental Health First Aid certificate valid for three years and are invited to join the Association of Mental Health First Aiders, gaining access to ongoing support, resources, and community events that help them continue developing their skills.
This course is particularly valuable for teams and organisations committed to creating mentally healthy environments, as well as for individuals who want to be better prepared to support friends, family and colleagues through mental health challenges.

Mental Health Aware
The Mental Health Aware course is an introductory half-day training programme designed to raise understanding of mental health, build confidence in supporting others, and begin to challenge unhelpful stigma. It is suitable for anyone looking to increase their awareness, whether in the workplace, community, or personal life. The course can be delivered via online video conferencing, offering flexible access while ensuring interactive learning.
Participants will explore what mental health is, how to recognise its importance, and how societal attitudes can influence support and wellbeing. The course provides a basic knowledge of some common mental health issues and introduces practical ways to maintain your own mental wellbeing. A key focus is on developing the confidence to support someone who may be in distress or experiencing a mental health difficulty, including understanding early signs and knowing how to respond sensitively.
Learning happens through a blend of presentations, group discussions, and workshop activities, all designed to be engaging and supportive. Class sizes are intentionally kept small (typically up to 25 people) to allow participants to feel safe and supported throughout the training.

By the end of the course, learners will have:
-
A clearer understanding of mental health and common misconceptions
-
Foundational awareness of mental health conditions
-
Tools to support their own wellbeing
-
Increased confidence to help others in distress or experiencing poor mental health
-
Practical strategies to challenge stigma in everyday life and at work.
Everyone who completes the training receives a certificate of attendance recognising that they are Mental Health Aware, along with a course manual and workbook toolkit to help reinforce learning and support ongoing wellbeing.
This course is ideal for individuals, teams, or organisations seeking an accessible, evidence-based introduction to mental health awareness. It lays the foundation for further learning and equips participants with the knowledge and confidence to contribute positively to mentally healthy environments.

Mental Health First Aid for Managers
MHFA for Managers is an evidence-based training course designed specifically for people with management and leadership responsibilities who want to support the mental health and wellbeing of their teams more effectively. Delivered by a workplace mental health expert, this course focuses on helping managers to build confidence, skills and practical approaches to having meaningful mental health conversations and supportive work environments.
This instructor-led course is delivered online, and is tailored to the realities of modern management. It goes beyond basic mental health awareness by exploring how managers can integrate mental wellbeing into everyday leadership, from recognising signs of poor mental health to responding empathetically when team members are struggling.
Throughout the training, participants will learn to recognise the impact of stress and poor mental health in the workplace, understand how these can affect performance and engagement, and practice having open, supportive conversations with confidence. The course emphasises practical, real-world skills that can be applied immediately, including how to signpost employees to appropriate support and how to model positive self-care as a leader.
Key learning outcomes include the ability to:
-
Describe what mental health is and how workplace factors (like stress or workload) influence wellbeing.
-
Identify early signs that a team member may be experiencing poor mental health.
-
Have constructive, empathetic conversations about mental health in a way that feels natural and respectful.
-
Respond effectively and appropriately in challenging situations related to employees’ mental wellbeing.

Training is delivered in small groups (typically up to 16 learners) to ensure rich discussion, personalised feedback and a safe environment for practicing skills. Activities include group discussions, scenario-based exercises, and reflective practice, all designed to embed learning in real workplace challenges.
Everyone who completes the MHFA for Managers course receives a digital certificate of attendance, a workbook and tools to reinforce learning, and practical resources that can be referred to long after the session ends.

This course is ideal for line managers, team leaders, supervisors and business owners who want to create psychologically safe teams, reduce stigma around mental health, and encourage a culture where people feel valued, understood and supported.
By equipping managers with the right skills and confidence, MHFA for Managers helps build healthier, more inclusive and more productive workplaces.
